Plate, 29 cm

Prof. Michael Powolny, co-founder of the “Wiener Werkstätte” and the pioneer of modern Austrian ceramics, designed the “Opus” shape in circa 1928/1929. Masterfully and uniquely playing with the edges and grooves of his shapes, he used lines and curvatures to create striking light effects. Following the “Neue Sachlichkeit” (new objectivity) style, he chose to reduce the components of his service to their constructive and functional form thus carefully striking a balance between elegant aesthetic and utilitarian usage.
