The classic “Schubert” shape dates back to the 19th century “Biedermeier era”. This historical period, spanning from the time of the Congress of Vienna at the end of the Napoleonic Wars up until the onset of the European Revolutions in 1848, is a notable era for central Europe.
Although the “Biedermeier era” is a historical reference it is also an artistic one. Indeed, it also refers to artistic styles that flourished in the fields of literature, music, visual arts and interior design. Major composers such as Schubert and Strauss, artists the likes of Waldmüller and renowned poets as in Grillparzer and Raimund all came to heavily influence the “Biedermeier era”.
Additionally, the “Biedermeier era” was known as an era when the concept of the home and the interior became highly valued. This need for private luxurious comfort led to growing interest in tabletop and household objects. Particular attention was given to high quality silverware, beautifully blown and carved glassware and exquisite porcelain.
As one of the oldest factories in Europe, the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory has succeeded again and again in creating table services which are true masterpieces with the potential to become treasured heirlooms.
In this particular case, pairing our aerial Schubert shape with our graceful floral Biedermeier pattern is a perfect reflection of the style and “savoir vivre” ambitions of the time. The timeless shape is also available with a variety of other beautifully hand painted patterns.
